Take a look at your computer keyboard. Yes, right now. Find the ‘f’ and the ‘j’ keys. Now, put your fingers on those two keys. Do you feel the bumps on the ‘f’ and ‘j’ keys? Do you know why those bumps are there?

I had never thought about this until recently. In fact, I had not really even noticed the bumps on the ‘f’ and the ‘j’ keys. So, when I looked up the answer, here is what I found.

‘People who touch-type (type without looking) use these two ridges to determine the position of their fingers on the keyboard. Touch typists put the index finger of their left hand on ‘F’ and the index finger of their right hand on ‘J’ before they type so they know where their fingers are.’

When I read this, my first thought was, “Hmm, those little bumps are a built-in keyboard GPS.

For those of us who name the name of Christ over our lives, we, too, have built-in GPS tools. In fact, we have two! Whoo-hoo! The first is the Holy Spirit. Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us; to teach and correct us. He lives in our hearts for the express purpose of keeping us on course. Sometimes, however, we can muzzle the Spirit with our thoughts, words, and actions. That is when we tend to veer off course badly.

The second GPS we have as Christians is the Word of God. Just as those bumps on a keyboard tell a typist exactly how to center their hands on the keyboard so they can type accurately, the Bible is our roadmap and guide to right and holy living. Consider the words of the Psalmist in Psalm 119 (NKJV):

Psalm 119:9: How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your Word.

Psalm 119:59: I thought about my ways and turned my feet to Your testimonies.

Psalm 119:66: Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe Your commandments.

Psalm 119:105: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:130: The entrance of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.

God’s Word positions us for a successful walk on the dusty sod of earth. It takes us down the path of a clean life, good judgment, knowledge and understanding. But just like any other GPS, we have to use it. We must open it, and spend time learning what it says. We must get to know its author, our Lord.

In the world in which we live, those of us who cling to the Bible as our GPS for life are being ridiculed and called ‘irrevelant’ and ‘intolerant’. Friends, God’s Word, His commands, are for our good. (Deuteronomy 10:12-13) God does not restrict us from certain actions and thoughts in order to be a cosmic kill-joy. Rather, He knows what consequences our actions will have, and He longs to save us from the repercussions of poor choices. (Deuteronomy 11:26-27) God desires His best for His kids, but we must choose to follow His ways.

Our culture is telling us that what has been considered wrong and sinful for eons is now good and right and acceptable. People, just because man calls something right does not mean God has changed His opinion on it. (Isaiah 5:20-21) Sin is still sin, and it will remain sin. It doesn’t matter if it takes the form of adultery, homosexuality, gluttony, lying, pride, or any other sin. Sin is sin, and it brings disastrous consequences.

Take a moment and ask yourself a few questions concerning God’s GPS:

  • Am I letting the Holy Spirit and the Bible guide my steps, or am I looking to other people or books for guidance?
  • Have I cleaned out my heart to make room for the Holy Spirit to work, or am I harboring a pet sin?
  • Is my Bible gathering dust on a shelf while I try to map my own course in life, or am I in the Scriptures each day seeking out God’s wisdom for life?

God has given us everything we need for doing life BIG in our time on this earth. (2 Peter 1:3) The question is whether we are taking advantage of what He has given us. Power up God’s GPS, friends!
