For the love of Pete! What is going on with 2020?

I have never, in all my 56 years, seen such a hot mess as 2020 is turning out to be…and we still have 5 months left! I feel pretty sure that IF aliens existed, they would set their spaceship GPS to another galaxy and steer clear of earth.

In all seriousness, friend, how are you doing? How is your heart? Your mind? How are your relationships, like marriage, friendships, and work relationships? I am not just asking to be polite. I really want to know how you are doing, and is there a way I can serve you?

As I finish the final couple of weeks of Beth Moore’s latest Bible study entitled “Chasing Vines”, and it has been so good. I had not done a Beth study in a while, but felt incredibly drawn to this one after seeing quotes from it on social media. I am so glad I delved into it, for I have found much that challenged and comforted me.

What Is Your Knot?

Today, I would like to explore something with you that gave me reason to pause, and I hope it will do the same for you in middle of crazy year 2020. How often have you said, ‘I am at the end of my rope’? Most of us have used that phrase at one time or another to indicate that we had reached our limit or run out of options.

There is usually more to the ‘end of the rope’ phrase, however, and it goes like this: ‘Tie a knot in the rope and hang on.’ In Chasing Vines, Moore shares how a woman asked her this question: What is your knot?

Friends, the question stopped me cold for a few moments. What is the knot onto which I am hanging this year, and every year? Beth’s answer was John 15:9: “As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.” While the love of Christ is an awesome knot on which to hang, I knew my knot was different.

Before I tell you what knot I am hanging onto in 2020, I would like to ask you the same question: What is your knot? Are you hanging onto politics, masks, stay-at-home, a relationship, a job, money, a place, a time-gone-by, a habit? What is the knot on which you are hanging?

Yes, I sound like a broken record over the past year, but God so cemented the concept of His absolute Sovereignty into my heart that I knew my knot was the Sovereignty of God. I am trusting that God is not sitting in heaven, looking at the angels and saying, “What in the world? I had no idea that was going to happen.”

With all my heart, I believe that everything God allows on this planet, EVERY-stinkin’-THING is sifted through the sovereignty and will of God. Does God cause bad things like COVID, death, economic downturns, and murder hornets (which was hugely anticlimactic)  to happen? Probably not, but He does use them to get our attention, and in the middle of the mess, I have a decision to make: Do I believe that God is working it all out for my good and His glory? Does the way I live testify to my belief in God’s Sovereignty?

Because here’s deal. I can say I believe in the Sovereignty of God all day long, but until I live like I believe it before a world that so desperately needs the hope and peace that comes from the knowledge of God’s Sovereignty, I am a just a clanging cymbal. So today, I’m pressing in and clinging to the God’s sovereignty.

What is your knot, friend?
