One morning recently I was sitting in my living room watching a DVD from Beth Moore’s new series on Proverbs called Wising Up ( www.lproof.org ). For anyone who has been exposed for even five minutes of Beth’s teaching, you know that she is not a sedate, calm or boring teacher. She is actively engaged with her audience and never boring. My husband passed through the living room about the time that Beth asked a question like, “What do you need?” He jokingly said, “She needs some Valium!!”
I began pondering that statement, and today’s issue of The Point is what emerged. Most of us are passionate about something, whether it is our kids, a sport, our jobs, our money, or our ministry. Just about everyone has a passion. Go to a little league ballgame and you will see some PASSIONATE parents. Spend an afternoon at a NASCAR race and you will be surrounded by 100,000 of your closest PASSIONATE (and sometimes very drunk) friends. Observe the life of a professional athlete like Tiger Woods. Passion for the sport of golf is a hallmark of Mr. Woods’ life.
I cannot think of anything on this earth that deserves our passion more than Jesus Christ and His precious Word. Hebrews 4: 12 tells us “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” God’s Word is something to be passionate about because it is alive and active. It has a purpose and that purpose is to feed the soul, draw the heart and correct the mind from its worldly way of thinking. Everything that you and I need in order to live in this world in a Christ-like manner is contained in God’s Word.
As I go through this life, I want others to remember me for my love for Christ and my passion for His Word. Sure, many will think I am weird and they will be right. I am pretty weird, but I love Jesus with all my heart and I want that to be what others see when they look at me or hear me speak. I spent many years sitting on the spiritual fence or blatantly living in Satan’s backyard. I want my life to count for Christ as I run the last half of my race.
Jesus was so passionate about you and about me that He gave His very life for us. How can we be any less passionate about Him?
