Today’s topic at The Loft is ‘choose a verse’. A verse from Scripture….just one verse, though? There are so many that speak to me, so many that bless me. How do I choose just one?

If I must choose one today, here it is. In fact, it is only part of a verse, but I’m going to go ahead and give you the entire verse. It is Genesis 12:4 (ESV)

So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

I want to camp out on the first nine words.

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him….

These nine words challenge me, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Back in verse one of Genesis 12, God had a little conversation with Abram. It was really a one-way conversation. God told Abram to pack up, leave everything that is familiar, and set out for a foreign land. God tells Abram, in verses 2-3, that He will bless Abram and make his name great in return for his obedience to what God asks. Next thing you know, Abram is packed and headed out.

The Scripture does not give us much in the way of details.

  • Abram was leaving family behind…..who was not going?
  • Abram was being asked to give up his security…his livelihood, his home, his position in the community.
  • Abram and the Mrs. were not just going a few miles down the road. They were going a few hundred miles at minimum….on foot…or camel. Yet when they started out, they didn’t know WHERE they were going.
  • Abram’s family had been an idol worshipping family, so how and when did Abram come to know this God who was asking him to pack it all up and go?

The thing that stuns and challenges me every single time I read this passage is that Abram went.

No questions.

No bargaining with God.

No arguing.

No procrastinating.

The man just packed up and went. The woman, too.

That, friends, is RADICAL OBEDIENCE.

How often does God ask me to do something, and I just do it? Without questioning. Without reasoning it through to make it make sense. (Often God’s requests do not make sense, in the human realm.) Just do it.

I must confess that kind of radical obedience is not commonplace in our world, or in my life. BUT, I want it to be. I want to trust God enough that when He asks something of me, I just do it.

Lord, please forgive my lack of obedience. Help me to trust You so deeply that whatever You ask of me, my answer is ‘Yes’.
