“I will lift up my eyes to hills, where does my help come from. My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121: 1-2
This, along with the rest of Psalm 121 was the focal passage that I taught from at the North Georgia Women’s Event this weekend. It was a sweet time of fellowship among women of all varieties. We were young and old, black and white, shy and outgoing, but all were beautiful to the Lord.
On Friday night my focus was on who or what we lift our eyes up to other than Jesus. We all have idols in our lives and my goal was to help the ladies examine their hearts to find any idols that they were lifting their eyes to. We looked at the Hebrew word that is used for ‘lift up’, which is nasa. This word is used in a variety of ways in the Old Testament, but some were especially pertinent to our time of study. One of the meanings of nasa is ‘to investigate’. How often do we really investigate the things that we so easily lift our eyes up to? If we investigated those things in our lives that we so readily allow to become idols, we would find they are not worthy of our trust.
I gave the ladies a quote by John Calvin that was especially pertinent to this idea of lifting our eyes up to things or people other than Jesus. So often the things that we lift our eyes up to are good things. Calvin said, “the evil in our desire typically does not lie in what we want, but that we want it too much.” Ever wanted something too much??????
On Friday I talked to the ladies about how the Lord is our keeper, our protector. I shared some of my personal testimony with them about how the Lord has so faithfully kept me and protected me over the years. Praise You, Jesus!
On Saturday we had the opportunity to worship and study at a waterfall near Blairsville and our text for that time was Psalm 23. The ladies were able to personalize the Psalm for themselves and then share that with the group. We also shared in communion at the waterfall and each lady was anointed with oil.
It was a wonderful weekend full of fun and laughter, but also a time where many of us were called to a deeper walk with Christ. I was honored to serve these ladies and open the Word before them.
