When I went treasure hunting in my closets for things to use in this Remember When??? series, I found a bag that contained these:

Did anyone else have a purse like this with interchangable covers? I loved mine and really carried it a lot for several years. I think this must have been in my teen years. As you can see, I was well covered with covers for my purse. Did not matter what color outfit I was wearing, I could have a purse that matched. Can’t believe I kept these, to be honest!!

The other thing I found was this:

Anyone else make one of these purses when they were young? Actually, this one has my sister’s name on it. Mine was blue, but somehow I’ve ended up with her treasure.

My guess is that every single one of us has a storehouse of old purses that we no longer use. It is just a XX chromosome kind of thing. Obviously Jesus had no clue how important a woman’s pocketbook clearly is to her when he told the disciples in Luke 10: 4 “Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.”
I sooner leave my sandals than my purse!! Good grief, where in the world would we put all the things that we, women, think we simply MUST have in our purses?? Things like hand sanitizer, lipstick, baby wipes, pocket knife, and a whole host of other necessities.

Looking at these pictures of my ‘blast from the past’ purses, I am struck by the symbolism of them.

The box like purse reminds me of how often I try to put my BIG God in a tiny little box. I attempt make Him fit into my idea of God and conform to my requests and desires. Just when my controlling personality thinks I have it all together and God is doing it my way, He pops the lid on the box and OUT. HE. COMES. He shows me that He is so much bigger than I can ever imagine and can do exceedingly more than I can ask.

The purse with all the covers speaks to me of all the masks we (I am surely including myself in this ‘we’) wear. Most of us have a ‘cover’ for virtually any situation that might arise on a given day. We have the ‘perfect’ wife cover for those days when the last words we said to our man were not at all nice. You know that cover–we use it a lot on Sunday mornings after we have fought like cats and dogs all the way to church. Suddenly when we step out of the car—Whoosh!!–on goes the perfect wife cover and we smile like nothing is wrong.

Perhaps you have the ‘best mom on the block’ cover. You might wear it when you are with other moms, all the while feeling like such a failure in that area.

Or what about the ‘my background is NOT dysfunctional’ cover. Good grief, what would people think of me if they really knew what I had done in my past. I must never let the cat out of the bag that I ___________________. Fill in the blank, girls, because I think most of us have something in our past that, unless we have submitted it to the Holy Spirit, we would rather it not be on the front page of the paper for the world to read.

Really, girls, the only cover we need is the Psalm 91 cover. HE covers us with His feathers and under His wings we can find security. When we wear that cover, we are stylin’ and profilin’!!

See you next week for more “Remember When????”
