Our first date – July 4th weekend 1994

It never occurred to me to fall in love with him.

First he was the very steady boyfriend of my best high school girlfriend. Then, he was just a good friend of mine…never an object of romance for me. No, never!
God obviously had different plans.
Greg and I met when he began dating my best friend in high school. He was sixteen or seventeen, tall, athletic and quite popular. My friend was a cute, popular cheerleader. They made a great couple. I was plain and ordinary, a member of the band and pretty danged good student.
Even after he and my girlfriend broke up, Greg and I remained friends. Over the years we kept in touch simply because we were interested in what was going on in the other’s life. In 1984, he married a girl from middle Georgia and in 1985 I married the fellow I dated all through high school. Our friendship became like many from high school–catching up when we would both happen to be back in Blairsville at the same time.
I divorced in 1988 and was working in Snellville, Georgia (where everybody’s somebody or so the town motto goes). In 1990 I heard that Greg had decided to leave the pharmacy profession (who can blame him?) and go to dental school. Around the same time, I received a phone call from Greg telling me that he was going to be in Atlanta for a meeting and asking if I wanted to have dinner. I thought that it would be nice to catch up with my old friend and so I agreed.
Greg came to my apartment where I fixed dinner for the two of us (not a smart move—being alone in a room with a married man) and learned that he was separated from his wife.  As we talked and caught up on one another’s lives that evening, Greg looked at me and said,
“You know I’ve always loved you, don’t you?”

For the love of heaven, what do you think I did? I totally ignored Greg’s words. I quickly changed the subject. In my mind, I thought, “A married man whose marriage is on the rocks out looking for a good time. Well, he won’t get it from this girl. No he won’t”.
We finished the evening and said goodbye. A few months later, I heard that Greg and his wife were back together and were expecting a child. I thought to myself, “Yep, you were right.”

It would be almost 4 years before I heard from Greg again………

More tomorrow…………………..
