If we tune our spiritual ears to the right pitch we can hear the bells of hell tolling in the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16. Read a few verses with me.
Luke 16:19-24 NIV emphasis, mine
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
Can you hear them? Hell’s bells sound a great deal like the souls of those who have chosen to go there crying out for relief from their torment. Listen! “I am in agony in this fire.” Notice the rich man didn’t ask to be released from hell. He knew that his fate was just. He only asked for a tiny bit of relief.
My pastor’s sermons on Sunday were about how we, as Christians, have become hardened to the fact that people are dying and going to hell every day. Most Christians really don’t even think about hell and most preachers rarely preach about it. Jesus talked about it several times.
How often do you look at those that you pass on the street and wonder if they are bound for hell? Do you really care? If you do, what are you doing about it? What am I doing about it? It is time that I, for one, got up out of my comfortable pew and went out in the world and shared the good news of Jesus every day. How about you?
