On Thursday evenings I am leading this study in my hometown. Obviously I am intimately familiar with the study, but each time I lead a session or sit down to review in preparation for a session, God speaks to me from one of the verses that I wrote into the study. It is proof that God’s Word is alive and active (Hebrews 4:12) and speaks into our lives each and every time we open it.
Last night we discussed Week 4 which is entitled, ‘When Character Was King”. On Day 3 we reviewed verses from Proverbs that pack a whallop concerning our tongues and our speech. Folks, our tongues can get us into a peck of trouble, and I am probably the worst of offenders in this regard.
In an effort to share the convicting L-O-V-E, I wanted to offer up a few of the verses (from the NIV) that we looked at:
Proverbs 11: 9With his mouth the godless destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous escape.Proverbs 13: 3He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.Proverbs 17: 28Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.Proverbs 18:2A fool finds no pleasure in understandingbut delights in airing his own opinions.Proverbs 21: 23He who guards his mouth and his tonguekeeps himself from calamity.
Friends, I have been a fool with my tongue SO MANY TIMES in my life. These verses are proof positive that the Word of God is practical for us and speaks into our lives on a daily basis. I do not want to be a fool and I bet you don’t either. Let’s remember these verses as we do life.
