The Point

“There once was a man, his name John, sent by God to point out the way to the Life-Light.” John 1:6 (The Message- The Bible in Contemporary Language)
Can I Really Trust Him?
Ok, I am going to be transparent with you right now!! I am scared to death of horses. Don’t know why—one never bit me or kicked me or even looked cross-eyed at me. The only time I was ever on a horse I was about 9 years old and when he leaned over to drink water out of the lake I nearly fell off. That was it for me–never got back on one.
I am, however, incredibly drawn to them. I think they are beautiful creatures and they have the most beautiful, kind eyes. Our neighbors have horses in the pasture that joins our property and many days when I am out for my morning exercise, I will stop, walk to the gate and very tentatively rub one of them on the head. They seem to enjoy the contact, although I am sure they sense how nervous I am around them. I wish I were not, but I am.
Recently as I rubbed the neck of one of the horses in the pasture, the thought occurred to me that all too often we feel about God the very same way I feel about horses. We are scared to death of Him. We may have absolutely no concrete reason for our mistrust of God but for whatever reason, He scares the living daylights out of us.
I know that deep in the heart of every human being there is a God shaped place that can be filled by nothing or no one other than God, but we are so frightened of allowing Him to get close to us that we don’t give Him a chance.
Once I began to really study the Word of God and communicate with Him in prayer, I understood better the heart of God. His desire is not to frighten us but rather to draw us to Him. He longs for us to spend time with Him. If He did not long for that relationship He would never have sent Jesus to earth to die and pay the penalty for our sin so that we could live forever with Him.
Are you frightened of God? What are you scared of? Do you think that if you mess up, He will abandon you? Do you think that you have already messed up so badly that He could never feel anything but contempt for you? Then you do not truly understand God. In Psalm 86:15 we hear David telling us,” But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”
He loves you and me more than we can imagine. Zephaniah 3: 17 echoes God’s love for us, “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” Did you hear that? He rejoices over you with singing!
He longs for a relationship with you and me and He has already done the hard work of providing payment for any sin that you have ever or will ever commit. The Bible confirms this when it tells us in Romans 5: 8, ‘But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us’ and in 1 John 3: 1, ‘How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!’. All you have to do is ask Him to use Jesus’ death on the cross to pay the penalty for your sin and when you do, He remembers that sin no longer.
GOD loves you!! God LOVES you!! God loves YOU!! Don’t be afraid of Him!! He doesn’t want to hurt you, but rather wants a relationship with you. Take a chance. Trust Him! Look into His heart and find love unlike anything you have ever known!!
